Why Herbalism?

Using herbs to combat sickness or to support health and wellness has been the primary method of health for as long as we can imagine. According to the World Health Organization, 80% of the world's population still relies on plants and traditional systems of healing.

However traditional herbalism is a different paradigm of healing than we are normally accustomed to. Instead of using herbs to suppress symptoms or to treat a disease, they are used to help a person achieve vibrant health by supporting the body's natural healing abilities.

Differences between Western Medicine and Herbalism...

For example, if someone has a main complaint of a skin rash, and they go to see a western medicine doctor, the doctor will most likely give them a diagnosis (perhaps dermatitis) and then give them a prescription (perhaps steroids).

If that same person went to see an herbalist they will have a different experience entirely. Instead the herbalist plays a role of detective, asking WHY this person is experiencing this symptom. An herbalist will want to know the quality of the rash. Is it hot? Itchy? Flaky? Moist? These energetic qualities of the symptom will help point to herbs that can help address the root problem. An herbalist will also want to know more about this person. What is their diet? lifestyle? stress levels? etc.

After the whole person has been evaluated, suggestions are made for diet, lifestyle and herbs.

Food is often our best medicine
Herbs work best for people, not for diseases

The profit-driven herbal marketing world sometimes gives the illusion that herbs are used as substitutes for pharmaceutical drugs. People with this misconception often ask the question, "What herb is good for insomnia?" or "What herb is good to lower cholesterol."

Herbs are not used to their potential when used in this way. Furthermore, herbalists do not treat disease nor do they prescribe medicine. Instead they are looking for patterns of imbalance in the body and then educating the person about what herbs, foods and lifestyle changes the person could use to help correct that imbalance.

Herbalists believe that when the entire whole is healthy, the body can heal itself.
